Helen: Hello, welcome to Ask About Britain from BBC Learning English. I m Helen.

Jin: 我是金妮。

Helen: This is the programme in which you can ask us about something you find interesting or puzzling about British culture.

Jin: 所以如果你对英国文化有什么疑惑，我们一定为你解答。

Helen: So what question have we got today from our wonderful listeners.

Jin: Let s see. Karen Lin 通过我们的网站给咱们提出了这样一个问题。

中学课本中说 英国食品是炸鱼土豆条和一些快餐 。那英国的传统食物是什么呢?

Helen: Karen s question is about food, and more specifically traditional British food.

Jin: Em, 这个问题估计很多想来英国的朋友们都不是太清楚的。

Helen: I m afraid that I don t agree with the Chinese text book.

Jin: 为了让大家走出误区，我们找来了爱吃的Jonathan，听一听他给我们讲解英国传统食物。

Well Helen, there are lots and lots of food that English people eat. Here are just a few, the English fry up, sausages and mash, roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, fish and chip, steak and kidney pudding, and for pudding, you might have spotted dick, rice pudding, or strawberries and cream if it s summer time.

Jin: 稍等，稍等，这么多菜色啊，让我们一个一个来讲吧。

Helen: Of course. Let s take it slow. First the English fry up.

Jin: 英国的传统早餐，fry up.

Insert

This is still considered a very traditional way to start the day, it s quite a full meal, fried bacon, fried sausages, fried bread, may be some mushrooms, grilled tomatoes, baked beans, so it s quite an substantial big meal.

Jin: 这早饭还真是货真价实的一顿大餐啊。而且大部分都是油炸食品，炸熏肉，炸香肠，炸面包，烤蕃茄，再加烘豆，也就是那种用番茄酱炖出来的黄豆。

Helen: It s great for the winter months. But not for those on a diet or super health conscious.

Jin: 那正餐，咱们可以吃什么传统菜呢？

If it s a weekday, grilled sausage with potatoes that s mashed with butter and milk, salt and pepper, may be a little vegetable to go with it.

Jin: Jonathan 提到 sausage and mash,就是烤肠和土豆泥。搅拌土豆泥的时候一定要加些黄油牛奶，再撒上盐和胡椒，口味才正宗。

Helen: Again, because sausage and mash is a hot dish, it best eaten when you are feeling hungry and cold.

Jin: 周末和其他日子吃的又不太一样。很多人都喜欢在周日的中午吃一顿传统大餐，被称之为周日大烤。那大烤的都有些什么呢？

If it was the weekend and the whole family was together, you can buy a big piece of beef, cook that in the oven, and you d have roast potatoes and some seasonal vegetable.

Jin: 我喜欢烤牛肉。把大块儿牛肉放到烤箱里，烤出原汁原味，味道真是不错。

Helen: The Sunday roast is a big meal, therefore traditionally it s usually eaten on Sunday with family and friends.

Helen: Shall we move on to desserts?

Jin: Sounds good. 让我们来听一听英国人都爱吃些什么甜点吧。

Rice pudding, as it sounds, just rice in a milky sauce, very delicious, some times you can put it in the oven and bake it, so it has a little crust on the top and make it more tasty.

Helen: Rice pudding, yummy!

Jin: I m not sure about this one. Rice pudding 类似一种米粥，就是把牛奶，砂糖和稀饭搅和到一起，咱们中国来的朋友们估计会吃不消吧？

Helen: But why not?

Jin: 因为中国人不太习惯米粥布丁那种又甜又腻的质感，没法儿把米饭和牛奶联系到一块儿呀。

Helen: Okay, so may be strawberries and cream could be a better choice.

Insert

If you are in the middle of summer, a traditional sweet or dessert is strawberries and cream. If the strawberries are good, they should be sweet naturally, you shouldn t have to add any sugar. The strawberries should be delicious on their own, and you just have a little bit of cream on them. Perfect!

Jin: Strawberries and cream, 草莓加奶油，一道简单的夏季甜品就出炉了。

Helen: So if you love strawberries, then this is the perfect dessert for you.

Jin: 养眼又爽口，要是去看温勃尔顿网球锦标赛的时候带上一份儿，那可就惬意喽。

Helen: Absolutely, it s a must have for the Wimbledon Tennis Championship.
